Abstract

The rational use of iodinated contrast agents is essential for performing high-quality computed tomography scans; however, inappropriate use can lead to high costs and patient risks, such as adverse reactions and renal impairment. At the Hospital Regional de Cotia, a high consumption of iodinated contrast agents was observed, resulting in significant costs. This study aimed to implement a continuous improvement cycle Plan, Do, Check, Act to optimize contrast use, aiming to reduce consumption by 10% within three months without compromising image quality. The methodology included training the technical team, revising clinical protocols, and improving communication between the radiology team and requesting physicians. Results showed a 26.39% reduction in iodinated contrast consumption, surpassing the proposed goal, with the maintenance of diagnostic image quality.
